Asahi Tanker decided to build two electric tankers equipped with lithium-ion batteries for the first time in the world

Asahi Tanker has decided to build two world’s first zero-emission electric propulsion tankers. The specifications of the vessel will use the “e5 tanker” planned and designed by e5 Lab was jointly established the companies Exeno Yamamizu, MOL, Mitsubishi Corporation and Asahi Tanker and will be completed sequentially from March 2022 to March 2023.
The vessel is a pure battery tanker powered by large-capacity lithium-ion batteries is scheduled to enter Tokyo Bay as a marine fuel supply vessel.
Completely electrify the ship’s core energy system to achieve zero emissions of CO2 (carbon dioxide), NOx (nitrogen oxide), SOx (sulfur oxide), smoke, etc. Aim for a significant reduction.
In addition to suppressing noise and vibration, the vessel will be operated in consideration of the crew and the environment around the port.
Various digital tools, including various automated equipment and IoT (Internet of Things) will adopted to reduce the burden of crew onboard work and improve operating efficiency.
Asahi Tanker and e5 Lab will work on improving the crew’s working environment and protecting the global environment, which are urgent issues for coastal shipping, through the development and introduction of advanced vessels, and will continue to provide safer and higher quality transport services.
At the same time, we will contribute the evolution of future industries in order to continue to support Japan’s society and economy.
